The second grade teachers at Black's Mill Elementary are very excited about working with your child this year.  We believe that a child's education is a shared responsibility among teachers, parents and students.  Second grade is a transformation year for students to become independent learners and use the foundation skills they have learned in previous years.

In second grade, instructional time will focus on the following concepts:

Math: add and subtract within 20, represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction, work with equal groups as a foundation for multiplication, understand place value, measurement, work with time and money, represent and interpret data & shapes and their attributes.

Reading/ELA: read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension, phonics, collective nouns, plural nouns, reflexive pronouns, past tense irregular verbs, adjectives, adverbs, simple and compound sentences, commas, dictionary skills, context clues, prefix/suffix, compound words, writing.

Social Studies:  government and the need for rules and laws, identify the President, Governor and Mayor and where they work, locate and compare the regions and rivers of Georgia, goods and services, Georgia Creek & Cherokee cultures, Historical figures in Georgia.

Science: matter and energy, seasonal changes, pushes and pulls, night sky and changing and moving of the sun, life cycles.

All second grade standards can be found at  www.georgiastandards.org.

We look forward to working closely with each of you to ensure your child will have a positive educational experience in second grade.
