Reading Tips & Ideas

Tips for Reading With Your Kindergarten to Third Grader:

Keep reading to your child even when he/she can read! Choose books that are too difficult or long to read on their own.
Try reading books with chapters and talk about what is happening in the story. Encourage your child to make predictions of what could happen next.
Talk with your child about what they liked best about the story. Ask what types of stories they like best ~ adventure, mystery, animal stories, etc.
Take turns reading! But don't interrupt to correct mistakes that do not change the meaning.
Enjoy yourself and have fun when you're reading together! The most important thing you can do to help your child become a successful reader is to let him/her know that you enjoy and value reading.

Make reading fun! This is a time to look forward to being together!
